Hair Prep Before the Pool || Advice

Everyone wants to keep their hair nice and healthy. Going to the pool and swimming is great exercise. But just because you like the pool, doesn't mean your hair does. To protect your hair, the goal is to reduce the amount of contact between your hair and the chlorinated water. Here are some tips to keeping your hair happy during those summer pool parties.

  • Cap It
    • Yup, the ultimate way to protect your hair in a pool is to wear a swim cap. Time to rock out your inner swimmer.
  • Tie It Back
    • Leaving your hair down while in the pool causes it to get tangled, which leads to damage. So, if you have short hair-pin it back, medium length hair-ponytail or bun, and long hair-braid.
  • Soak
    • Going into chlorinated water while your hair is dry, will cause it to soak up all the chemicals in the water thus stripping your hair of it's essential oils and leading to damage at the roots and ends of your hair. So, before going for a swim, rinse your hair with un-chlorinated water-tap water. This provides somewhat of a wall between the roots of your hair and the chlorinated water of the pool.
  • Condition
    • Use a leave in conditioner on dampened hair, before going in the pool. This creates a stronger wall between your hair and the chemicals of the pool, than just soaking your hair before.
  • Oil
    • Rather than using leave-in conditioner, you can lather your hair in coconut oil before swimming. It initially is the same concept as conditioning and soaking, to create a protective wall.
